Episode 12: How Toxic Masculinity Affects Us All

Ivy Griffin

This week’s episode topic is one that I have a passion for and am frequently talking to clients about in session. Today is all about looking more at the buzz word, Toxic Masculinity, and how understanding this concept and challenging the more damaging parts can be helpful for all people, not just men. I will clarify what parts of traditional masculinity have not been shown to be harmful, and which parts have a tangible, negative effect on men, women, children, and our society at large.

Episode 2: The Importance of Building Rapport and Being Intentional

Ivy Griffin

Episode Two takes a look at two concepts that are pivotal in experiencing good therapy: Building Rapport and Acting Intentionally.

Rapport here is seen as the most important ingredient for building a quality therapeutic relationship, and is responsible for helping people feel safe enough to open up about their inner world (which can be so scary!).

Intentionality on the other hand, we describe as the quality of acting purposefully, which is very important for a therapist to embody and model, through the use of targeted interventions and techniques. We take a broad strokes look at some of the more common ways of intervening and acting in the room.

Join us next time when we discuss some of the major models of therapy and how they view change within the individual.

Welcome to the Thrive Therapy Podcast, Inside Look. I am your host, Ben Friday, LMFT. I chose to start this podcast as a means to improve education and understanding about therapy, and to de-mystify and reduce stigma about mental health. I also want to give folks who are currently engaged in services a deeper look at what might be going on behind the scenes during their sessions.

I hope to eventually cover a range of topics relevant to mental health, such as additional understanding and education about specific models of therapy, diagnoses, and major concepts that play a key role in counseling and human psychology in general. I also plan on interviewing other therapists in the field to get a wide range of perspectives.

Episodes are planned to air every other week for now, so check back every 1st and 3rd Friday of the month. Also, if you enjoy the podcast, don’t forget to rate, review, and share!
