Online Therapy in California
Who Online Therapy Works Well For
Highly sensitive people -- many HSPs actually find online therapy more comfortable than in-person sessions. Being in your own space removes one layer of sensory input, and that can make it easier to focus on the work and go deeper faster. Learn more about our HSP therapy.
Adults dealing with anxiety -- if anxiety makes it harder to leave the house, or if your schedule is already stretched and commuting to therapy feels like one more stressor, online removes that friction. The work itself is the same. Learn more about anxiety therapy.
Trauma survivors -- being able to do trauma-informed therapy from your own home can actually feel safer for some clients. Our therapists are trained in somatic approaches and brainspotting, both of which translate well to online sessions.
LGBTQ+ clients -- finding a genuinely affirming therapist can be difficult depending on where you live in California. Online therapy means you can work with our team regardless of your location in the state. Learn more about our LGBTQ+ affirming therapy.
Teens and young adults -- many teens are more comfortable opening up on video than sitting across from an adult in an unfamiliar office. We work with teens and college students and young adults across California online.
Professionals and busy adults -- if a consistent weekly session is hard to protect in your schedule in person, online makes it realistic to actually show up for yourself every week. See our page for professionals and entrepreneurs.
People outside Sacramento -- Thrive is based in Midtown Sacramento, but our online therapy practice serves all of California. If you have connected with our approach or with one of our therapists and you are not local, we can still work together.
What Online Therapy at Thrive Looks Like
Sessions are 50 minutes, held weekly, and conducted through a secure HIPAA-compliant video platform. You do not need to download anything. You will receive a link before each session.
What you need: a private space, a device with a camera and microphone, and a reliable internet connection.
Getting started is simple. Reach out through our contact page or call us directly. We schedule a free 15-minute consultation, match you with the therapist who fits your needs and personality, and get your first session on the calendar. See our FAQs page for information on session costs and availability, and our insurance page for out-of-network reimbursement options.
All Specialties Available Online
Every core specialty at Thrive is available through online therapy:
Trauma therapy and PTSD treatment
Brainspotting (available online)
Expressive arts therapy (adapted format for online)
Online or In Person
Both work. Research consistently shows that online therapy is as effective as in-person for most mental health presentations, including anxiety, depression, and trauma. The best format is the one you will actually use consistently.
Many of our clients do both. Online during a busy week, in person when they can make it to our Midtown Sacramento office at 2131 Capitol Ave. We are flexible, and your therapist can work with whatever rhythm keeps you showing up.
Phone therapy
Not a tech person or worried about internet issues? No worries, talking to your therapist over the phone is a great option too. Some people prefer the phone because sometimes it feels easier to open up and allows you to move around your space freely while you talk.
We just encourage you to find a private, comfortable space—whether in your bedroom, outside, or even in your car—where you can focus on working with your therapist to reach your goals.
Just let us know your preference when you schedule an appointment!
