Counseling for kids

Is your child not acting like him or herself? Struggling with social skills? Acting worried or depressed or angry? Experiencing big life changes or an upsetting event?

If so, counseling with a child therapistcan be a good starting place. Therapy can offer the opportunity to get to the root of what is causing the difficulty for your child, to work through challenging feelings and to develop new coping skills and better relationships along the way.

Therapy with children can look pretty different than therapy with adults. We specialize in child centered play therapy since children's primary language is play. Simply talking about concerns is not helpful or developmentally appropriate for kids. Ever had a conversation with your child that consisted of:

"What happened?"  "I don't know."

"Why did you…?"  [shrug]

These types of conversations are frustrating for everyone!

Since children's cognitive and language skills are not yet fully developed, play, art and sand tray therapy provide children with the opportunity to project their feelings and experiences and process their challenges. We focus on child centered play therapy techngiques and provide counseling and therapy services for children ages 8 and up. During our sessions, we'll use an array of games—as well as toys, dolls, puppets and art—as tools to build new skills and to support you and your child in working through challenges.
